Stronger Together: Evolving DE&I for a Changing World

Posted on May 21, 2025 by Lauren Street

Recently, a powerful gathering took place at the House of Lords, hosted by leading inclusive training and development organisation, Moving Ahead, in partnership with Man Bites Dog.

Under the Chatham House Rule, a diverse group of global leaders spanning legal, DE&I, brand, and people-focused roles came together to reflect on the future of diversity, equity and inclusion in a complex, evolving landscape.

The discussions were rich, honest, and energising – offering a collective sense of resolve and shared purpose. Below, we explore the key themes that emerged.

Resilience in the Face of Change

Progress in DE&I has never been linear. From the early days of landmark campaigns like The 30% Club to today’s pushback and polarisation, the path forward continues to require resilience. Speakers acknowledged growing divergence in global DE&I legislation and practice – particularly across the US and Europe – urging leaders to avoid a “lowest common denominator” approach. Instead, the best programmes will remain adaptable while staying ambitious and inclusive. This is a moment for reflection and reinvention – not retreat.

Culture as the Anchor

In uncertain times, organisational culture becomes the steadying force. Leaders emphasised the importance of cultivating values-driven, psychologically safe environments where diverse perspectives can be expressed and respected.

It’s clear: companies that have laid the groundwork for authentic, inclusive cultures will weather storms better than those who’ve treated DE&I as a box-ticking exercise.

Leading Through Change with Integrity

The challenge for today’s leaders is to navigate shifting expectations without losing sight of their organisation’s core values. Change is inevitable, but fear of making mistakes shouldn’t stall action. Instead, fostering a culture of openness and learning can turn missteps into meaningful progress.

There was also a powerful reminder not to leave any regions – or people – behind. Particularly in geographies where DE&I is becoming more contentious, thoughtful leadership and creative support strategies are essential.

From DE&I to Inclusive Impact

Many organisations are reconsidering how they define and communicate DE&I. Terms like "inclusion”, "talent" and "fairness" are gaining traction – not as euphemisms, but as part of a deeper rethinking of what real impact and true inclusivity looks like.

Authenticity matters. So does clarity of purpose. Whether rebranding or reframing their approach, leaders were united in their belief that progress lies in practical, visible, and credible action – not perfection.

A Call to Action

This gathering underscored a simple truth: we’re stronger together. There is enormous power in shared experiences, collaborative thinking and courageous leadership. For those of us invested in evolving inclusive cultures, the message is clear – now is not the time to stall or scale back. Now is the time to unite, adapt and lead with purpose.

To continue the momentum, the hosts are inviting DE&I practitioners and allies to contribute to an ongoing dialogue. If you’d like to take part in future discussions or share your insights through please get in touch. Let’s keep moving forward together.
